250+ Fantasy Character Names, Sorted by Kind
Naming a character is easier when you know what the name should sound like before you start reading options. These are grouped by the register they belong to rather than alphabetically — pick a group, then spin within it.
250 names in 6 groups
Elven and fae
Flowing, vowel-heavy, and usually longer than they need to be.(40)
Dwarven and mountain-born
Blunt consonants, hard stops, nothing decorative.(40)
Noble and courtly
For characters with a title, an estate, or designs on both.(40)
Wild and untamed
Rangers, druids, and people who live a long way from a road.(40)
Shadowed and villainous
Names that arrive before the character does.(40)
Scholars and mystics
Wizards, seers and archivists — names with weight and a little dust.(50)
Technical Precision & Fairness
TheNameWheel uses a Web Crypto random number source in supported browsers with rejection sampling for an unbiased 1-in-N distribution on equal-weight spins.
- Random Number Source
- Web Crypto where supported
- Uses window.crypto.getRandomValues() with rejection sampling when available, with a Math.random fallback for older environments.
- Selection Distribution
- Uniform 1-in-N
- Equal-weight entries have the same configured chance on each spin; custom weights deliberately change those odds.
- Execution Environment
- Client-side only
- The winner is selected in your browser. Analytics events omit wheel titles, entries, share codes, and results.
- Maximum Entries
- 50,000 names
- The wheel handles up to 50 000 entries per session and stores them locally unless you create a share link.
- Result Timing
- Pre-determined
- The winning entry is computed before the animation starts. The spin is a reveal, not the draw itself.
- Verification
- Step-by-step guide →
Don't take our word for it — verify it yourself.
Open DevTools → Network, add a distinctive test entry, and confirm that its text is absent from requests. Analytics requests may appear. Or inspect
crypto.getRandomValuesin the Sources panel.
Questions
How do I pick a name that fits the setting?
Decide the sound before the meaning. Readers infer culture from phonetics long before they learn anything about it — a name full of long vowels and soft consonants reads as elven whether or not you have written a single word about elves. Pick the group that sounds right, then choose within it.
Should names within one culture sound alike?
Yes, and this is the most common thing to get wrong. Real naming traditions share sounds: if your dwarves are Thrain, Dagnar and Korrin, a dwarf called Aelith will read as a mistake. Consistency within a group does more for believability than any individual name choice.
Can I use these names commercially?
Ordinary given names cannot be owned, and the invented ones here are free to use in your own work. A handful are drawn from mythology and folklore, which is public domain. Avoid anything strongly associated with a specific published work — a name is fine, a name plus that character's traits is not.
What if I want a name generated rather than chosen?
Load one group onto the wheel and spin. For a party of characters, turn on Auto-Remove so each spin takes its result off the wheel — you get a full set with no repeats, which is exactly what you want when naming a group at once.
