How to use the Random Letter Wheel

The Random Letter Wheel is a customisable spinner for word games, classroom vocabulary exercises, and creative prompts. Load A–Z, vowels, consonants, or lowercase letters from the preset buttons, then remove any letters you do not want. Equal-weight letters have the same selection chance; weights can make common letters such as E or A appear more often. Auto-remove lets you work through a set without repeats. The tool is free and requires no account. Its working list is stored locally by default, while Share, Embed, and QR links place the list in the URL.

What a letter wheel is good for

Word games

Spin for the starting letter of a word in Scrabble, Bananagrams, or Categories.

Classroom activities

"Name something that starts with…" vocabulary games, run without the teacher choosing.

Name prompts

Spin for the first letter of a baby name, a character name, or a team name.

Coding exercises

Generate random initials or placeholder variable names during a workshop.

Alphabet learning

An interactive letter-of-the-day activity for early learners, big enough to see from the carpet.

Random Letter Wheel — questions people ask

Can I load the full A–Z alphabet at once?

Yes. Click the "A–Z (all)" preset above the wheel to load all 26 letters instantly. "Vowels only" and "Consonants only" load those subsets in the same click.

Can I exclude certain letters?

Yes. Remove any letter in the entries panel with the × button, and the remaining letters immediately split the wheel evenly between them. Setting a letter’s weight to 0 keeps it in the list, greyed out, but off the wheel.

Can I use uppercase and lowercase letters?

Yes. There is a "Lowercase a–z" preset, and you can mix cases freely by typing or pasting your own list into Bulk Edit.

Is each letter equally likely?

Yes, by default. If you would rather reflect real English letter frequency — where E turns up far more than Q — give the common letters a higher weight and the wheel will show those wider slices.

Can I spin through all 26 letters without repeats?

Yes. Turn on Auto-remove Winner in Options. Each spin removes the letter it picked, so the wheel works through the alphabet in a random order with no repeats until it is empty.

About the Random Letter Wheel

The Random Letter Wheel is a simple tool that turns out to be surprisingly versatile. Language teachers use it for vocabulary prompts, game designers use it to seed random names, and puzzle setters use it to add variety to an activity.

Because it runs in any browser on any device, it is always to hand — ready for a quick classroom spin or a living-room word game with no setup at all.
